چکیده

In our lab at the Center for Intelligent Systems we are currently developing a dual armed humanoid service robot called ISAC One of our focus areas in this research is the use of humanoid robots for en tertainment One application we have developed is using ISAC to play a musical instrument called the Theremin In this paper we present our Theremin playing robot and describe the software system used to con trol the robot The software runs on commercial PC equipment under the Windows NT operating system The robot being a rubbertuator based humanoid is quite well suited for entertaining with the Theremin The motion is natural and vibrato is achieved by os cillating the muscles The robot achieves perfect pitch and thus can play notes more accurately than novice Theremin players

Position Control Using Pitch Feedback

A position control system utilizing pitch feedback is being developed. The system will be demonstrated on a robot playing a musical instrument called the theremin. Unlike previous research involving computationally intensive pitch sensors, we would like to explore the possibility of a control system using a pitch sensor with a low computation overhead. The robot is being improved upon to make i...

Integration of flutist gesture recognition and beat tracking for human-robot ensemble

A novel human-robot trio-ensemble system with a human flutist, a human drummer and a robot-thereminist is presented. The participants of the ensemble play music in a score-based way and simultaneously, which has only been achieved independently. In our ensemble, both auditory and visual cues are used to synchronize the participants’ performances. The ensemble begins with the flutist’s start ges...

Music-Ensemble Robot That Is Capable of Playing the Theremin While Listening to the Accompanied Music

Our goal is to achieve a musical ensemble among a robot and human musicians where the robot listens to the music with its own microphones. The main issues are (1) robust beat-tracking since the robot hears its own generated sounds in addition to the accompanied music, and (2) robust synchronizing its performance with the accompanied music even if humans’ musical performance fluctuates. This pap...

Two-level Synchronization using Particle Filter for Co-player Music Robots

Our goal is to develop a co-player music robot, i.e., a robot that presents a musical expression together with humans. A music interaction requires two important functions: synchronization with the music and musical expression, such as dancing or playing a musical instrument. Many instrumentperforming robots are only capable of the latter function, they may have difficulty in playing live with ...
